It’s often said that blood runs thicker than water … so apparently nothing beats family ties which is a great thing, if you get along well with your folks. Your family knows you since you came into this world – you are born into a circle of people whom you’ll be attached to in some way or another all your life long. They are supposed to love you no matter what, which is a comforting thought!
So by having nailed down some people who have to love you by definition - what about friends?
I went to surf the waves of knowledge on the world-wide-web in search of the official ‘friend’-definition and was surprised to find very little information. I stared by looking up the words origin: "A friend is a lover, literally. The relationship between Latin amīcus "friend" and amō "I love" is clear, as is the relationship between Greek philos "friend" and phileō "I love." The root also shows up in the name of the Germanic deity Frigg, the goddess of love, who lives on today in the word Friday.”
This I found very interesting – first of all it defines friends as people who love us because they chose to without obligation – and this is, although they know us very well – yeahhhh! And secondly, no wonder everyone looooves Fridays – after all ‘friendliness’ is already rooted in the origin of the word itself and why not make it a day to let all our friends know we love them?!
On Wikipedia I was stunned to find the description of ‘friend’ as a tool for rock climbing – of all things!!!
Since this all sounded very dry cut I went on some more research at the ‘Urban Directory’ where I found some funny, (odd and offensive, which I see no point in repeating) and cute definitions:
  • A friend is someone who doesn't screen your calls. He/She is also someone who tries to stay in touch despite an unfathomable distance between you and him/her.
  • A friend is someone who knows you but loves you anyway.
  • A person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. A person who would never intentionally hurt you, lie to you, deceive you, manipulate you, and who takes great care to be kind to you. Someone whom you trust without question because he/she has never given you any reason not to. Someone you enjoy being around and look forward to seeing.
  • Someone whom you hold dear. Maybe not someone you'd marry, but you'd never want them to leave.
  • A person who doesn't care what you look like but who you are as a human being.
  • An individual who cares about you and seeks no personal gain from their relationship with you.
To me friends are a life line – they make every place in the world home by sharing parts of their own life, thoughts, secrets, believes, skills etc. They walk part of life’s path with me – they love me for or besides my craziness, have seen me through ups and downs and give me roots. We have lots of fun, enjoy each other’s company, support each other, exchange experiences, see each other through crises, share travel reports and embark on creative projects together :o)
Here are some of my personal favorite quotes that stand for friendship:
    • Here is my secret. It is very simple: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. (Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.)
    • Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed." (Les hommes ont oublié cette vérité, dit le renard. Mais tu ne dois pas l’oublier. Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé.)
  • Friends are angles without wings.
  • A friend is someone who knows the melody of your heart and will sing it to you if you have forgotten it.
Friends are my chosen family and the biggest treasures in life!!! So, this is to you my friends: I love & treasure your presence in my life and am grateful our paths have crossed!!!

What a lovely post! Reminds me of what I once read in a book by Richard Bach (of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"" fame):
"The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof."
Glad you're my friend - here's to you too!
