Fashionista goes to Nice

Did you ever notice how ‚Nice‘already has the word ‚nice‘worked into itself? It truly is one of the most beautiful, wonderfully glamorous spots on planet earth!!! The landscape is all pastel coloured, the architecture is a mix of Baroque, Art Nouveau and Modern. There are lovely big & old palm trees, lots of bougainvilleas & oleander which fragrance the air in combination with a salty sea breeze  ... Ahhhhh, who doesn’t looooove the Côte d'Azur?!!
My Hubby & I put up at the ‘Negresco Hotel’ – one of the most fabulous places ever ... rooms are all done up in different colours (needless to say I of course asked for one in pink) and furnished with genuine antiques, art is framed on the walls of all the hallways (on our floor it was by Dali) – so you don’t even need to go to a museum, the staff is very polite & friendly, room service is served on Hutschenreuther fine bone china with rose pattern ...  a real treat of luxury!
After we were settled into our room overlooking the Promenade des Anglais we couldn’t wait to hit town! Obviously when you stay at the Côte d'Azur it goes without saying that you ought to have a new and glamorous bikini with sarong, so best to buy it right there and while you’re at it, you might as well get matching flip-flops ;o) After that task was off my list, we went to sit in one of the countless side walk cafes to have our fist glass of Champagne, really the only thing to drink while you’re over there, and watch people pass by ;o)
It is really interesting to see the mix of styles represented in Nice – some people are all designer clad, probably having spent a year’s worth of university fees on one single outfit, lots of flowy dresses, lots of casual wear but interestingly it all blends nicely into one whole well balanced picture. So you’re free to wear whatever you want, be it tip to toe done up in Chanel or H&M,  you always fit in :o)
You can definitely make out the local French women though without them even having to utter a single word ... they are très chique and have their makeup perfectly in place even at 37°C at 5p.m. in the afternoon! Hair is immaculately set, handbags match their shoes, and their clothes are elegant but never loud. Then you spot AND hear American tourists, who almost always wear Bermuda shorts and tennis shoes with perpetual white socks  ;o) Also lots of gay Italian couples stick out of the tourist crowd – they are styled within an inch of their being, clad in Prada or Dolce & Gabbana (carrying same designer shopping bags as well, naturellement) and have a cloud of fresh aftershave surrounding them. You can spot lots of plastic surgery – some done very well and some not executed all too successfully ... What struck me most was the number of highly pregnant women in flowing, discreetly patterned, ankle length dresses, looking sun-kissed, very content and happy although their condition must be rather uncomfortable in this sweltering heat – they seems to be the truly biggest fashion trend of spring/summer 2010 – one I’m gonna give a miss for the time being ;o)
After I had a swim in the sparkly gold (!!!) bathtub, I changed into my airy black Gauri & Nainika dress, accessorized it with Chanel shoes & bag and off we went.  On the way to the main square of the old town we passed many small, adorable boutiques well worth checking out (which I did the day after – isn’t it great to get new stuff in places where you’re really happy? Every time you wear it back home – besides the fact that none else has the same – the vacation feeling is back!) and the square itself was bustling with life – all the restaurants had tables outside, lots of stalls with handicrafts, street musicians, dance artists performing ... sitting on one of said outside tables having dinner and slurping more champagne, watching people pass by ... now, that’s what I call great summer feeling :o)))

The next 2 days were spent on the beach under an umbrella (who needs to do the rotisserie chicken and cultivate wrinkles?!) reading a nice book, relaxing and enjoying the salty sea breeze :o) My skin got sun-kissed none the less and then it was unfortunately already time to go back home– I could have stayed on forever and do hope to do this again sometime real soon!!!
